Every year, Stanford STAND recruits hundreds of students, faculty and staff to fast for a day in solidarity with the refugees in the Darfur region of Sudan. Then our participants donate the money they would have spent on food (recommended - $10) to an organization working in Darfur. This year, Humanity United will be matching all donations dollar for dollar. We are partnering with DarfurStoves (http://darfurstoves.org), which is currently providing high-efficiency, low-cost stoves to 5000 families in the Darfur region. Since they require less fuel, women don't have to leave the internally displaced camps to collect firewood as often -- this is critical because when women leave the camps, they are at high risk for being victims of violence, rape or murder. At the end of the day, we'll celebrate our achievement together with a "Break the Fast" -- we'll have music, eat much-deserved food, and hear from leaders in the Darfur movement.
This year, we are also excited to be partnering with UC Berkeley. We may be rivals on the field, but we are partners in ending genocide. On the same day, students at Berkeley will also be fasting and donating to DarfurStoves Project, which was created in Berkeley labs with input from Stanford engineers. A partnership of which to be proud!
Join us for a fantastic day!
